The Nika Foundation

The Nika Foundation was born out of a desire to make a contribution, however small, towards ending poverty in South Africa. The founders grew up in Cape Town and are keenly aware of the pervasive poverty that exists, and believe that by connecting with those with the means and resources required, we can assist in carrying out this “act of justice”.  The Foundation’s initial focus is the Cape Peninsula.

“Overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice.

It is the protection of a fundamental human right, the right to dignity and a decent life. While poverty persists, there is no true freedom.”
– Nelson Mandela.

We believe that a well-rounded education is critical to overcoming poverty. Our mission is to give children a chance by assisting them in their academic studies and by encouraging them to participate in after school life skills programs such as sport, art, and music. To achieve this, we have partnered with two South African organizations, the African Scholars Fund (ASF) and MasiSports, at Masiphumelele High School outside Cape Town.

ASF has a 50+ year record of assisting children in need of academic support, while MasiSports (founded in 2016) has had great success in establishing a vibrant after school life skills program in Masiphumelele. We chose these organizations because of their proven track record improving the lives of children and their outstanding leadership and governance records. Working together, we believe that we have an opportunity to make an immediate impact on the lives of many schoolchildren.

The Nika Foundation will be focusing our collective resources in a targeted, direct, measured, and transparent manner in an effort to be as impactful as possible.

The partnership enables us to integrate the efforts of ASF and MasiSports at Masiphumelele High School, thereby encouraging children to develop their skills inside and outside the classroom. Students are provided with funds to purchase school uniforms, stationary, incidentals, and materials needed to support their participation in the after school programs. Ongoing support is contingent on maintenance of good grades and active participation in the after school programs, both of which are actively monitored by the ASF, MasiSports and the school itself.

Due to this close monitoring we will be able to identify students that we can support as they pursue further education at University, Technicon, or Vocational training schools.  Support will include direct financial aid, assistance in obtaining third party financial aid and career counseling.

The Nika Foundation will also consider making contributions towards special projects at the Masiphumelele Primary and High schools.  These projects would include investments in the libraries, art supplies, new sports fields, equipment, coaching, field trips etc. etc.

We would greatly appreciate your support in this life-changing cause. Making a difference in the life of just one child is impactful, but with your support we know we can change many children’s lives, and move one step closer to overcoming poverty one child at a time.
