The Nika Foundation

The Nika Foundation was born out of a desire to make a contribution, however small, towards ending poverty in South Africa. The founders grew up in Cape Town and are keenly aware of the pervasive poverty that exists and believe that by connecting with those privileged to have the means and resources required, we can assist in carrying out Nelson Mandela’s “act of justice”.  The Foundation’s initial focus is on learners at Masiphumelele HS outside Cape Town.

“Overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice.

It is the protection of a fundamental human right, the right to dignity and a decent life. While poverty persists, there is no true freedom.”
– Nelson Mandela.

Nika means to “give” in Xhosa and our mission is to give children hope and a pathway out of poverty by assisting them in their academic studies and encouraging them to participate in after-school life skills programs including sport, art, and music. To achieve this, we have partnered with the African Scholars Fund (ASF), IkamvaYouth, and MasiSports to support 85 learners at Masiphumelele High School.

ASF has a 50+ year record assisting learners in need of academic support, IkamvaYouth provides tutoring, mentoring and career guidance, and MasiSports offers after school life skills, sports and cultural programs. We chose these high integrity organizations because of their proven track record improving the lives of learners and their outstanding leadership and governance.

Our partnerships enable us to integrate our efforts encouraging learners to develop their skills inside and outside the classroom to reach their full potential and lift themselves out of poverty. We believe that we have a unique opportunity to make an immediate impact on the lives of many learners.

The Nika Foundation focuses our collective resources in a targeted, direct, and transparent manner in order to be as impactful as possible.

We would greatly appreciate your support in this life-changing cause. Making a difference in the life of just one child is impactful, but with your support we know we can change many children’s lives and move a step closer to overcoming poverty one child at a time.

The Nika Foundation has Section 501 (c) (3) status thereby making any contributions tax deductible in the US. (#92-3775817)
